Nikka Costa Dirty Disco
Prince made it a habit of pulling talented female musicians into his orbit, and one of those is Nikka Costa. After a six-year hiatus, Nikka is feeling the funk in a way that is not to be messed with. The spirits of Paisley Park are very evident on her new album Dirty Disco, as well as generous helpings of Sly Stone and Parliament-Funkadelic. The album is divided into halves. The first five tracks are the dirtiest and feel like a jackhammer pounding on your vital organs. Thankfully, things slow down just a bit on the final five tracks without losing much of the prior dirtiness.
A.G. Sully Premonition of Rain
A.G.’s excellent debut album was one of my favorites of 2022. Her new album adds ethereal, airy, Billie Eilish-lie qualities to her neo-soul sound. On Facebook, she asked her followers for their thoughts and feelings about the new album, and I wrote this:
Thoughts and feelings? Captivating. Rich. Sumptuous. Sonically delightful. A favorite song is impossible. Every time I think I have it, the next one hits. Every time I listen, I hear something in a track I hadn’t noticed before. But my favorite thing about the album is your vocals. Exquisite. Creative. And incredibly produced. The whole album is wonderful from beginning to end.
The Blessed Madonna, Kylie Minoque Edge of Saturday Night
The Blessed Madonna has helped other artists produce bangers. Kylie has a history of singing bangers. This is a banger.
Rag’n’Bone Man A Rush of Blood b/w What Do You Believe In
After a rather disappointing second album, he’s released two exciting tracks from his upcoming third album What Do You Believe In, which is expected to drop on October 18.
