30-Day Song Challenge Day 24 – A Song You’ve Had Stuck in Your Head

A friend and long-time loyal blog follower recently sent me a 30-Day Song Challenge meme in the hope that I couldn’t resist taking the challenge and blogging about it. Here’s Day #24 – A Song You’ve Had Stuck in Your Head: In This Moment, Oh Lord.

In This Moment is a heavy metal band that I am not really a fan of but am occasionally fascinated by[1]. I tend to be drawn to female fronted metal bands (e.g. Evanescence, Lacuna Coil), dark, dense songs, and big anthemic hooks. Oh Lord has all of that and Maria Brinks’s intense, disembodied wail in the chorus can stay on infinite loop in my brain for days.

The theatrical video (a specialty of theirs) is intriguing, too, as it portrays a variety of spiritual dichotomies: sinner/saint; sanctity/degradation; repentance/impenitence; God/Devil; and a woman playing traditionally held male roles. Seeing the video makes the song sound even bigger, darker more menacing and more powerful.

And every time I play it, it stays in my head for days.

[1] I really like their version of Phil Collin’s In the Air Tonight and River of Fire. They’ve also done a dark twist on White Wedding (Billy Idol) with Judas Priest’s Rob Halford that they call Black Wedding; and a playful Call Me (Blondie). But a lot of their other music is too heavy metal for my tastes.
