Finally, the long slog of auditions is over. So many stories. So much looking at the rough and wondering if diamonds are in there. So many judges’ hijinks. Finally, we “are going to Hollywood”, to borrow an oft-shouted phrase.
But before we get there, here are the three Idolists that captured my interest Sunday night. In the interest of full disclosure, when I watch Idol after it’s aired, I fast-forward through the backstories. Hence my shock when Kayla Stewart entered the room with some dude and got me like that can’t be Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, is it? And sure enough, it was. I don’t understand why he can’t pick up the phone and call some label execs to get his daughter closer to the front of the I-wanna-be-star line but I’m sure they have their reasons.
I didn’t think she was great but there is a lot to like about her unique style and comfort singing in front of people.
There’s been a strong 70s-ish singer-songwriter vibe this year and young Phil Kane is another in that mold. I agree with Luke about the Jackson Browne vibes.
Finally, in keeping with the looking for diamonds in the rough theme this year, I liked the sweet distinctive tone of Cam Amen’s voice. I was fine with the last Platinum ticket going to him.
That’s it. That’s my list. As always, these evaluations are not my predictions of future results and are constantly subject to re-evaluation under the light of my withering musings, especially when we get to Hollywood.
And I’m excited for Hollywood.

See you next week for two nights! In the meantime, I hope you get to listen to some good music. The other night, I got a text from My Daughter Cassandra (MDC) to check out Larkin Poe. Whew. Lawdhavemercy.
